Sodium Valporate

Just wanted to highlight the risk of sodium valporate in pregnancy... it's really important if you are on it to discuss it with your specialist if you are considering having a baby or pregnant. Don't panic and don't stop taking it without talking to a specialist but definitely discuss the alternatives. Here's an article just been published giving some of the problems associated with the drug in pregnancy.

http://thechart.blogs.cnn.com/2013/05/06/fda-warns-pregnant-women-about-epilepsy-drug/

Extract from the article:

The drug also is used to treat epileptic seizures and bipolar disorder. The agency says pregnant women taking valproate products for these conditions should only take the drug if other medications don’t work. Women who can get pregnant should only use valproate products if absolutely necessary. According to a safety communication issued by the Agency on Monday, “all non-pregnant women of childbearing age taking valproate products should use effective birth control.”

Getting out and about ~ bus passes and disabled railcards

On Monday I lost my bus pass so I had to pay for the buses... I think I take my disabled bus pass for granted too much, buses are soooo expensive, I can't believe anyone can afford to get the bus everywhere.  I think if I didn't have my bus pass I wouldn't be able to afford to get out half as much as I do at the moment.  It would be really isolating, I just hope everyone with uncontrolled epilepsy knows they are eligible for a bus pass and disabled rail card... it's not always very well advertised and I didn't know the first time I lost my licence.

You can get a disabled rail card from the National Rail Enquiries website:

www.disabledpersons-railcard.co.uk

Bus Passes are applied for locally but can be used nationally, the following link redirects you to your local issuing council:

www.gov.uk/apply-for-disabled-bus-pass

If your lucky enough to live in London you could be eligible for a Freedom Pass,we live about 2miles outside the zone which is annoying!  Here's the link:

Know what your entitled to so you can get out and about meeting other mum's and babies, I found that was so important, being at home too much is not only mind numbingly boring but also can get you down and make you feel very alone... you're not, don't let not being able to drive stop you from getting out and about for you and your baby :)

Where's Rabbit!?!

Almost had a disaster today!!!!  Riley has a rabbit she's very attached to, especially since starting nursery.  We do have a reserve just in case it goes missing but it's never quite the same... anyway we were just leaving The Nest today when I realised Rabbit wasn't in her buggy.  I knew she'd had it in town so it must have dropped out on the way, luckily someone had picked it up and put it on a wall just down the road so he was saved. Phew!

Riley's 1st Birthday!

I can't believe Riley is almost 1, this year has flown by and it has been truely life changing.  So much has happened mostly amazing, watching Riley grow up and learning new things all the time, I love her so much, I feel very lucky.  But there have been sad times too, losing my Grandad was really hard, the first few months with Riley were hard, learning to be a mum whilst greaving for my Grandad was really tough.  But things have moved on, I love being a mum and I now feel like the memories of my Grandad make me smile more than missing him brings tears.

So Riley is 1 and we're planning a party for her, just something quite small, with family and some of Riley's friends.  Hopefully it will be a nice day, we've bought a picnic table and hopefully we'll have a BBQ and we've got Riley a paddling pool so that the babies can have some water play.  It should be a really good day, just can't believe it's been a year, time moves so fast.

Let's hope the weather's good :)

Baby Passport Photos

Bit Random but... I was walking past one of those passport photo booths today and saw they cost £5...  thought people might want to know about:

www.paspic.com

Basically you take your photo against a plain background (so can make sure it's a good one!), upload it and they edit it as required to ensure it meets legal requirements and then send it to you in the post, arriving in a couple of days.  And it only costs £4.95...

Thought it might be useful to know as taking photos of your baby for a passport etc is quite a challenge and this makes it really easy, we've used it for Riley's passport and Rich's driving licence and they've been accepted for both :) great website!

Nanny's First Day with Riley

Yesterday was the first day I left Riley with Nanny while I was at work.  When Rich and me came in after work, Riley was sitting on Nanny's lap all ready for bed reading a book.  When she saw us she gave us a big smile and wanted a cuddle, but no tears like when we pick her up from nursery.

Nanny said they had had a lovely day, they'd been to The Nest, spent time in the garden and had a walk with Lily dog.  Riley must have been knackered out as she slept from 8pm until 6.30am without a feed, woke for a feed and is now still asleep! (it may help a little bit we've put blackout curtains in her room...)

I am so glad they had such a lovely time and Riley was so happy, at least that's one day of the week I won't need to worry about her being upset and unsettled.  All I know is Riley loves her Nanny :)

Bookworm...
